How Long Does a Roof Last in Connecticut?

August 20, 2026

The brochure says 25 to 30 years. Connecticut weather has other plans. Here is how long each roof type really lasts here, what shortens the clock, and how to buy back years.

Real lifespans in Connecticut

  • Architectural asphalt shingles: rated 25 to 30 years, and in CT most reach 20 to 25. The gap is our climate, not the product.
  • Metal (standing seam or metal shingle): 50 years or more, sheds snow, shrugs off wind. Costs more up front, outlives two asphalt roofs.
  • Slate and cedar: slate can pass 75 years with maintenance; cedar runs 25 to 35 when it is ventilated well and kept clear of moss.

What Connecticut does to a roof

Our roofs freeze and thaw dozens of times each winter. Water works into tiny gaps, expands as ice, and pries them wider every cycle. Add snow load, nor'easter winds that lift shingle edges, ice dams backing water up under the eaves, and humid summers cooking the asphalt, and you get a roof that ages faster than the same product would in a mild climate.

The single biggest lifespan lever: ventilation

An attic that cannot breathe cooks shingles from below in summer and builds ice dams in winter. Balanced intake and exhaust ventilation keeps the roof deck close to outdoor temperature, which is what the shingle warranty assumes. It is the least visible part of a roof and the most common thing we find done wrong on roofs that failed early. We treat proper ventilation as standard on every replacement, not an upgrade.

Signs your roof is near the end

  • Granules collecting in gutters, shiny bare patches on shingles
  • Curling or cupping edges across multiple slopes
  • Repeat leaks, or stains spreading on interior ceilings
  • Neighbors with same-age homes replacing theirs
