Valley cold and open ground in South Windsor
The town sits in the river valley where cold air collects on still winter nights, so ice forms at the eaves earlier and lasts longer than in the hills. The open fields and the flat ground along the river give wind a clear run at the subdivision slopes that face them, and summer thunderstorms bring gusts and occasional hail. Snow stays on the low-pitch raised ranches. The older streets have mature trees and shade; the newer ones are open and sun-exposed, which ages the south slopes faster.
