River storms and old eaves in Wethersfield
The town lies on the river plain across from Glastonbury, so storms track up the valley with wind that reaches the open streets near the Cove and the meadows. Mature trees shade Old Wethersfield and the older neighborhoods, keeping north slopes damp and growing algae on shingles and moss on slate. Winter brings ice at the eaves on the old houses, whose attics were never insulated for a modern roof, and on the postwar capes with thin insulation. Spring freeze and thaw works at every old chimney and piece of flashing.
