Pachaug forest shade and Voluntown winters
Forest defines Voluntown's roofs. Shade keeps north slopes wet all year, moss and lichen grow on shingles, needles and leaves pack every valley and gutter, and limbs come down in every ice storm. The few open fields take wind across exposed slopes. Winters in eastern Connecticut are long, with heavy snow that builds ice at the eaves of cold attics. The brook valleys and ponds hold fog and damp, and a small leak on a seasonal house can run unnoticed for months.
