Farmington River fog and hill snow in New Hartford
The river valley holds fog and cold air, so village roofs ice at the eaves early and shaded slopes stay damp and mossy. The hills take heavy Litchfield County snow that lasts for months and wind across exposed ridge lots. Forest covers most of the town, filling valleys and gutters with leaves and needles and bringing limbs down in ice storms. Spring thaw is long, the river runs high and freeze and thaw works at the old chimneys of the mill houses.
