Sound exposure on Westbrook's shore roofs
The shore takes salt air and wind-driven rain from nor'easters and tropical storms off the Sound, which push water under shingles and flashing from angles ordinary rain never reaches and corrode exposed fasteners. South-facing shore slopes age in full sun. Inland, the wooded neighborhoods trade wind for shade, moss and algae on north slopes and debris in every valley. Winters are mild by inland standards, but ice still forms at the eaves on warm-attic capes after a cold snap, and the tidal marshes keep the low ground damp.
