Shade and inland winters on Orange roofs
Mature trees planted when the houses were built now shade most of Orange, keeping north slopes damp, growing moss and filling gutters every fall, with limbs down in ice storms. The town is inland enough for real winters, with ice at the eaves on warm-attic ranches after a cold snap, and close enough to the Sound to feel the wind of a nor'easter on exposed slopes. Freeze and thaw works at the old chimneys around the green, and summer storms bring gusts.
