Ellington's exposure, season by season
Open farmland is Ellington's defining exposure. Wind crosses the fields with nothing to slow it, so roofs facing the open ground lose tabs in a strong front and take wind-driven rain at every edge. Summer thunderstorms bring gusts and hail across the flat ground often enough that bruised shingles are a real concern. Winter brings heavy snow and cold, with ice at the eaves on warm attics. The lake and the wooded hills toward the east trade wind for shade and debris. Sun on the treeless subdivision slopes ages those roofs faster than shaded ones.
