Thompson's northeast corner winters
The northeast corner gets some of the longest winters in the state, with heavy snow that sits on roofs for weeks and ice at the eaves on cold mill-house attics and warm subdivision ones alike. The river valley through the mill villages holds damp and fog, and the close-set streets are shaded by old trees. Open farm fields take wind across exposed slopes, and the wooded subdivisions collect debris in every valley with limbs down after ice storms. Spring freeze and thaw is long and hard on old chimney flashing.
