Sound exposure and shade on Darien roofs
Shoreline roofs take salt air and wind-driven rain from nor'easters and tropical storms off the Sound, which push water up under shingles, slate and flashing from angles ordinary rain never reaches. Inland, the mature tree canopy shades roofs, grows moss and algae on north slopes and fills valleys and gutters every fall. Winters are milder than inland Connecticut, but complex rooflines with many inside corners still build ice behind dormers and in valleys after a cold snap, and freeze and thaw works at copper and lead flashing on the older houses.
