Woodland shade and snow on New Canaan's rooflines
New Canaan is inland and wooded, so the mature canopy shades most roofs, keeps north slopes damp, grows moss and algae and fills valleys and gutters every fall, with limbs down in ice storms. Winters are colder than the shore towns, and complex rooflines with many inside corners build ice behind dormers and in valleys. The flat roofs on the modern houses hold snow and ponding water and feel every freeze and thaw at their seams and edges. Open lots and ridge lines take wind across exposed slopes.
