Compo Beach wind and inland canopy on Westport roofs
The shoreline takes salt air and wind-driven rain from nor'easters and tropical storms off the Sound, which corrode fasteners and push water under shingles, cedar and flashing from angles ordinary rain never reaches. Inland, the mature canopy shades roofs, grows moss and algae on north slopes and fills valleys and gutters every fall. Winters are mild by inland standards, but complex rooflines with many inside corners still build ice behind dormers and in valleys after a cold snap, and the Saugatuck valley holds damp and fog.
