Housatonic valley cold and hill snow in Canaan
The Housatonic valley holds cold air and fog, so roofs in Falls Village ice at the eaves early and stay damp on shaded slopes. The hills on either side take heavy northwest Connecticut snow that lasts for months, and wind crosses the open farm fields with nothing to slow it. Forest shades most lots, grows moss on north slopes and drops limbs in ice storms. Spring freeze and thaw is long and works at old farmhouse chimneys, and a small leak on a weekend house can run unnoticed for weeks.
