Ridge wind and lake damp in Middlefield
The traprock ridge above the town sends wind across the farms and the lake and lifts tabs on exposed slopes, while the lake keeps its shoreline damp and mossy. The valley holds cold air and frost, so ice at the eaves is routine on cold village attics and warm subdivision ones alike. Forest on the hills fills valleys and gutters with debris and brings limbs down in ice storms. Summer thunderstorms coming over the ridge bring gusts and occasional hail, and spring freeze and thaw works at old chimney flashing.
