Inland winters and tree cover on Cheshire roofs
Cheshire sits inland between the Hanging Hills and the ridges to the west, so winters bring real snow and ice at the eaves on warm-attic colonials, with complex rooflines building ice behind dormers and in valleys. Mature trees shade most neighborhoods, keep north slopes damp, grow moss and fill valleys and gutters every fall, with limbs down in ice storms. The open ground along the canal line and the farms takes wind across exposed slopes, and summer storms bring gusts and occasional hail.
