Momauguin wind and inland shade in East Haven
The shore takes salt air and wind-driven rain from nor'easters off the Sound, which corrode fasteners and push water under shingles from unusual angles. Inland, the postwar streets have mature trees that shade roofs and fill gutters, and warm, lightly vented attics that build ice at the eaves after a cold snap. Winters are milder than inland Connecticut, but freeze and thaw still works at old chimneys, and summer storms bring gusts across the flats.
