Ridge wind and inland cold in North Branford
The Totoket ridge sends wind across the subdivisions below it, lifting tabs on exposed slopes, while the low ground toward the farms holds cold air and frost. Winters are colder than the shore a few miles south, with ice at the eaves on warm-attic raised ranches. Wooded lots on the slopes trade wind for shade, moss and debris in every valley, with limbs down in ice storms. Summer thunderstorms coming over the ridge bring gusts and occasional hail.
