Salt air on the points, shade in North Guilford
The shore points take salt air and wind-driven rain from nor'easters off the Sound, which corrode fasteners and push water under shingles, cedar and flashing from unusual angles. The green is open and takes wind across the steep old roofs around it. North Guilford is wooded and colder, with shade, moss, debris-filled valleys and ice at the eaves on cold farmhouse attics. The marshes keep the low ground damp, and freeze and thaw works at old chimney flashing everywhere.
