Hammonasset wind and North Madison shade
The shore takes salt air and wind-driven rain from nor'easters and tropical storms off the Sound, which corrode fasteners and push water under shingles, cedar and flashing from unusual angles, and south-facing shore slopes age in full sun. North Madison is the opposite: dense woodland shade that keeps roofs damp, grows moss and algae and fills valleys with leaves, with colder winters and ice at the eaves. The center sits between, with mature trees and old chimneys that freeze and thaw works at.
