East Lyme weather: Sound exposure at Niantic, shade in Flanders
The shore takes salt air and wind-driven rain from nor'easters and tropical storms off the Sound, which corrode fasteners and push water under shingles and flashing from unusual angles, and south-facing shore slopes age in full sun. Inland, the wooded neighborhoods trade wind for shade, moss and algae on north slopes and debris in every valley. Winters are mild by inland standards, but ice still forms at the eaves on warm-attic capes after a cold snap, and the river and marshes keep the low ground damp.
