Salt air, nor'easters and shade on Waterford roofs
Salt air and wind set the pace on the shore. Nor'easters and tropical storms drive rain up under shingles and flashing from angles a normal rain never reaches, and salt corrodes exposed fasteners and metal. Shingles on south-facing shore slopes age in full sun. Inland, the wooded neighborhoods of Quaker Hill trade wind for shade, moss and algae on north slopes and debris in every valley. Winters are milder than inland Connecticut but ice still forms at the eaves on warm-attic capes after a cold snap.
