Salt air on three sides: Groton's weather
Groton takes salt air from the Sound, the Thames and the Mystic River, and nor'easters and tropical storms hit Noank and the shore streets with wind-driven rain that pushes under shingles, cedar and flashing from unusual angles and corrodes exposed fasteners. Inland, the postwar neighborhoods have mature trees that fill gutters and warm, lightly vented attics that build ice at the eaves after a cold snap. Winters are mild by inland standards, but freeze and thaw still works at old chimneys in Mystic.
