Thames River damp and inland woods in Ledyard
The Thames keeps Gales Ferry damp and foggy and brings wind up the river from the Sound in storms, so river-facing slopes lose tabs. Inland, forest covers most lots, shading roofs, growing moss on north slopes and filling valleys and gutters with leaves, with limbs down in ice storms. Winters are milder than the hills to the north but cold enough for ice at the eaves on warm-attic capes and raised ranches. Spring freeze and thaw works at old chimney flashing in the center.
