Deep forest and deep snow in Union
Union is high, cold and wooded, close to the Massachusetts line. Snow arrives early, falls heavily and stays for months, so roofs carry load all winter and ice at the eaves can last from December to March. Forest shades nearly every roof, keeps north slopes wet, grows moss and drops needles and limbs in every valley. Ice storms bring branches down. The few open fields take wind across exposed slopes. Spring thaw is long, and a small leak on a seasonal house can run unnoticed until the owner returns.
