Willington's elevation, forest and the Fenton valley
The hills of Willington take heavier snow and longer cold than the river valley to the west, so ice at the eaves is routine on cold farmhouse attics and warm subdivision ones alike. Forest covers most lots and shades the roofs, grows moss on north slopes and fills valleys and gutters with debris, with limbs down after ice storms. The Fenton and Willimantic river valleys hold fog and damp on cold mornings. Open fields around the greens take wind across exposed slopes, and spring freeze and thaw is long.
