Scotland's open fields, woods and winter
Scotland's rolling fields leave many roofs open to wind, which crosses the farmland with nothing to slow it and lifts tabs on exposed slopes. The wooded lots between the fields trade wind for shade, moss and debris in every valley. Winters in the Quiet Corner are long and cold, with heavy snow that builds ice at the eaves of old farmhouses whose attics were never insulated. The brook valleys hold fog and damp, and spring freeze and thaw works at old chimney flashing.
