Hanging Hills wind and valley cold over Meriden
Meriden sits in a valley under the Hanging Hills, which send wind down across the city and lift tabs on exposed slopes, while the low ground holds cold air and frost. Inland winters bring snow that sits on flat sections and ice at the eaves of houses whose attics were never insulated. Street trees shade the older neighborhoods and fill gutters. Summer thunderstorms coming over the ridge bring gusts and occasional hail, and freeze and thaw works at old chimneys and flashing all season.
