Hop River cold and hillside wind in Andover
The Hop River valley holds cold air and fog, so roofs along it ice at the eaves early and stay damp on north slopes. The hills on either side take wind across open lots, and heavy inland snow sits on the low-pitch capes. Tree cover is thick across most of the town, filling valleys and gutters with leaves and needles and dropping limbs in ice storms. Freeze and thaw through a long Tolland County winter works at old farmhouse flashing and at the joints where lake cottage additions meet the original roof.
